North Country Fudge Shoppe - The History of Fudge
History tells us a fairly vague account of the origin of Fudge. Accidentally discovered in roughly 1886, it appears to have been the result of a "fudged" attempt at a batch of caramel. With similar ingredients and cooking temperatures, Fudge was born!
The exact date is not known for certain, however the archives of Vassar College revealed an account of Fudge first being made and sold at auction for 40 cents per pound in 1892. This gives us well over 100 years of fudge tradition.
The first fudge recipe on record was also from a female student of Vassar College named Emelyn B. Hartridge. It was a very simple recipe consisting of:
- 2 Cups granulated white sugar
- 1 Cup cream
- 2 Ounces unsweetened chocolate
- 1 Tablespoon butter
Though most accounts of the origins of Fudge vary slightly, it does appear certain that it is an American Invention that has become a part of American Heritage.
